If youâre looking for a day out with a difference, youâre in the right place. Our Self-Guided Tour lets you explore the whole prison at your leisure, making it the perfect day out for families with young children.
You’ll be given a visitor guide and map of the prison. As you explore, don’t forget to use the sound boxes and information boards to learn the facts and history of the prison. During your Self-Guided Tour, take photos and capture âCELLfiesâ as you soak up the unique atmosphere of this fascinating Victorian building.

As you explore the prison grounds, be sure to visit key locations including the prison wings, the exercise yard and the chilling execution room.
Near the Treadwheel building, uncover the harsh realities of Victorian hard labour and learn about the diseases that plagued inmates housed in the infirmary above. Step inside the Old Gate Lodge to see remnants of the original 1600s prison and visit the former Governorâs office to gain deeper insight into the prisonâs history.
Along the perimeter wall, youâll find the graves of seven executed men, as well as the site of two military firing squad executions.
