Celebrating Black History Month at Shepton Mallet Prison

Shepton Mallet Prison is proud to showcase a FREE Black History Month exhibition, running throughout the entire month of October. Plus, don’t miss the prison’s upcoming ‘Evening Behind Bars’ event for an evening of reflection and stories.

AN IMPORTANT AND MOVING EXHIBITION

You’re invited to an important and moving exhibition, which will explore the prison’s complex history and its association with the Black community. The exhibition consists of six mini exhibits that bring to light the untold stories of Black individuals during WWII and beyond.

Uncover stories that reflect broader societal struggles against racism and injustice. These stories, though difficult, are essential to understanding our past. By sharing them, we aim to foster reflection, dialogue and recognition of the resilience and courage shown by those affected.

AN EVENING OF REFLECTION AND STORIES

For just £10 per ticket and a 50% off discount for our annual pass holders, join us on Wednesday 16th October for an ‘Evening Behind Bars’. This special evening will delve into the stories, reflected in Lucy Bland’s book, Britain’s ‘Brown Babies’, of the children born to Black GIs and White British women during WWII.

Enjoy a complimentary drink as you meet our guest speaker, Susann Savidge, the Chair of the Somerset African Caribbean Network (SACN). Susann will lead a thought-provoking discussion on the lives of these children, who were often referred to as ‘Brown Babies’.
